Beneath the singular dust jacket of Charles White: ein Künstler Amerikas [an American Artist], published by VEB Verlag der Kunst, Dresden, 1955, there lay an equally singular design on the hardboard cover. The design featured the artist’s initials, with the C balanced on the central peak of the W. For good measure, CHARLES and WHITE appeared in the top left and right-hand corners of the cover. It was though, the five-pointed star, located in the middle of the C, that was perhaps the cover’s most distinctive feature.
