Hughes, Langston, 1902-1967, and *Arna Bontemps, 1902-1973 [Qi Zhang, translator]

Beijing: Zuo jia chu ban she, 1957. Paperback. [2], 102p. Softcover in original wrapper. 18 cm. Text moderately browned. Modest rippling along left side. Some adhesion along inner margin on last leaf. INSCRIBED in Chinese on the title-page by the translator. Chinese text. The illustration on the front cover is an edited version of the left portion of the Charles White print titled "Harvest Talk." We were told that this is a Chinese translation of "The Poetry of the Negro, 1746-1949," the anthology edited by Langston Hughes and Arna Bontemps. It includes one or more poems by at least seventeen African American authors (George Moses Horton, James M. Whitfield, Frances E. W. Harper, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Joseph Seamon Cotter, Fenton Johnson, Claude McKay, Countee Cullen, Jean Toomer, Langston Hughes, Waring Cuney, Frank Horne, Sterling Brown, Frank Marshall Davis, Melvin Tolson, Robert Hayden and Margaret Walker). Still, this volume seems much too slim to be a translation of the entire Hughes/Bontemps anthology. Perhaps it is a translation of the poems in that volume selected or approved for inclusion in ths volume. This copy is in the collection of Eddie Chambers. The global library organisation OCLC locates five other copies copies (National Library of China, Shanghai Library, Wuhan Library, Harvard-Yenching Library and Brown University).
